Social drinking after giving it up completely for 3 years was a little scary.
The first time I had tried an alcoholic beverage was when we stepped off the plane in Jamaica 3 years after I was first diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease. There were two things I noticed, “holy smokes was that rum punch good” and “wow, did it hit me fast!”
Now I never considered myself a big drinker, but I used to be able to hold my own pretty good; that had definitely changed. So the whole 10 days on the trip I watched how much I drank and always followed a drink with good old water. Fast forward a couple of years, and menopause added into the mix, I definitely noticed my tolerance was not the same. On top of feeling it quicker I also noticed the hot flashes were worse when I drank.
Currently, I enjoy an occasional glass of wine or a mixed drink, but I may go several weeks or months where I don’t have any at all.
Finding gluten free alcohol isn’t as hard nowadays and many companies are specifically marketing their products to the gluten free industry. Unless you are celiac most gluten is removed in the distillation process, so I have never had any issues finding products. One of my most favourite drinks is a Moscow Mule. It is super refreshing and I like that I can control the sugar as well using my Soda Stream.
So cheers to summer on the patio!
Moscow Mule Recipe (using a Sodastream)
250 ml of soda water from a Sodastream
30 ml of Organic Fair Ginger Ale syrup
Juice of ½ a lime
1 ½ oz of Gluten free vodka
Fresh mint sprig
In a short glass or copper mug filled with ice, pour your shot of vodka.
Squeeze your lime juice into the glass, then add your ginger syrup and soda water and stir well.
Top with a lime wedge and a mint leaf.
If you do not own a Sodastream get one they are a great way to cut pop (or soda) out of your diet and it is so much better for the environment!
You can also make this using Fever Tree organic Ginger Ale and omit the soda water and ginger syrup.
Happy Canada Day!
